Size of plots
Allotments are traditionally measured in ‘poles’ (sometimes called rods or perches), an old measurement dating back to Anglo-Saxon times. 10 poles is the standard size of an allotment, the equivalent of around 250 square metres or about the size of a doubles tennis court.
These days, because of work and other commitments, people often want smaller plots. Many cultivators at the Stockingstone site have plots of around 3 poles or 5 poles.
Cost of renting a plot
- The fee for 2026 is £9.80 per pole.
- Public Liability Insurance is a contribution of £3 (2026 figure)
- Tenancy Agreement [PDF]
There is also a one-off non-refundable fee of £10 for 2 keys. 1 key for the padlocks on main entrance (green) gate and second entrance (grey) gate, and 1 key for the toilets.
The annual payment is due by 31 October.
Update May 2026
There is a waiting list and when a plot becomes available we will contact people on a ‘first come first served’ basis. Right now, in May 2026, there are 35 people on the waiting list going back to the autumn of 2024. If you would like to be added to the waiting list please email stockingstoneroadallotments@gmail.com
Keeping contact details up to date
It’s important to keep your contact details up to date on the waiting list. A lot can happen in the 2, 3 and even 4 years as you are moving slowly to the top of the list. Report changes to stockingstoneroadallotments@gmail.com
Is an allotment right for me?
An allotment is quite a commitment, and you’ll need to invest time and labour to make it thrive.
Before we offer you a plot, we’d like to invite you to visit us on site to take a look and speak with an experienced plot holder, to get a better idea of what’s involved.
