Winner of the coveted title of Plot Holder of The Year 2024 is Mrs Monzione.
We like to have a theme for the judging every year to make sure we capture as many as possible of the features that make an allotment a great allotment. This year we decided on a ‘life-time achievement’ type of theme to celebrate the dedication of long-standing members who have battled with the clay soil and the high winds up here for many years. Someone who has persevered through droughts and floods, producing crops every growing season over a long period of time.
How to find that person? We decided the annual show prize winners’ list was a good starting point. This is the 8th annual show, but things were a bit more informal to start with, so we only have ‘statistics’ for 4 years; plus one show was cancelled due to Covid restrictions. And we found some likely candidates. People who have been growing crops that have been of a prize-winning standard in all the 4 shows.
But there can be only one winner. What decided it for us was the soil quality. The winning plot holder has put many years of effort into turning the heavy clay into lovely crumbly well-drained stuff that gives ideal growing conditions. Congratulations to
